Tumblr has officially closed down its "Tips" feature, which allowed creators to receive one-time payments from their followers. The company attributed the shutdown to low usage of the feature. Creators who previously used the tipping feature have until June 15 to withdraw any remaining funds.

This marks the latest failed attempt by Tumblr to implement a monetization feature. In 2022, the platform introduced Post+, a subscription service that allowed creators to offer exclusive content behind a paywall. However, Post+ was also discontinued last year due to negative user feedback.

Tumblr's current monetization strategy seems to revolve around its Supporter badge, a $2.99/month or $29.99/year subscription that allows users to display a badge on their blog. The company has stated on its website that the supporter badge will become more visually appealing over time as users continue to subscribe.
